Preparing Your Pet for a Move to Southwest Florida

Moving to a new home can be an exciting yet stressful experience, especially when you have a pet involved!

Preparing Your Pet for a Move to Southwest Florida

Update Vaccinations:

Before moving, it is important that all of your pet's vaccinations are up-to-date. This will ensure they stay healthy and safe during the trip and in their new home. Be sure to also get any additional vaccines specifically recommended for our area. Additionally, consider getting them microchipped or updating their collar tags with your current contact information as well as the new address you’ll be moving to.

Get Necessary Documents Ready:

Make sure to get all of your pet's medical records together before the move. This includes copies of their vaccinations, health certificates from the vet (if necessary), and other important documents related to their health and care needs. You may need these documents if you plan on taking them with you when flying or if you need to take them to see us here at Whitesands Animal Clinic for a check up after the move.

Plan Ahead:

When planning the move, include your pet in the process as much as possible. If they will be traveling with you, make sure they have a spot where they can rest comfortably during long trips and plan stops along the way so they can get out and stretch their legs. If you are unable to bring them with you, research local pet hotels or family members who can watch them until you arrive at your new home in Southwest Florida. Make sure to research dog parks, pet friendly restaurants and events in our area to have some things to do with your pets when you arrive as well.

Keep Routine:

Our pets are creatures of habit! I’m sure you’ve caught your dog or cat staring at you if you’re five minutes late with their dinner. As much as possible, try to keep your pet's routine consistent throughout the moving process. Feeding times should remain the same and regular walks should continue when possible so that there is still some normalcy for them during this period of transition.

Moving can be stressful for both pets and people but following these steps will help make it as smooth as possible! Keeping routine and having all necessary documents ready can make this transition easier on everyone involved so that way once arriving in Southwest Florida, both of you can enjoy exploring a brand new place together!
